Defending What Matters: How Sam Kumar Built an Army Against Cyber Criminals
Every day, cyber criminals break into businesses and steal money, data, and trust. Most companies believe they are protected. Many are not. Sam Kumar, Founder and CEO of Cyber Sainik, spent decades watching this gap widen, and then he decided to close it.
Based in Denver, Colorado, Cyber Sainik is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) through the Mountain Plains Minority Supplier Development Council. The company delivers cybersecurity and cyber insurance solutions to small and mid-sized businesses, enterprises, and now individual families, all at an enterprise-grade.
From Engineer to Entrepreneur
Sam’s path to entrepreneurship started with a single question. While working as a design engineer at Siemens, he noticed that all major decisions flowed from Germany, not from the American offices where the work was done. He asked his manager why, and the answer was direct: that is just how it works.
Sam looked in the mirror and asked himself whether he would ever be in a position to make the decisions. The answer was clear. Three months later, he left Siemens and started his first company.
“I will die trying, but I will never give up. That is how I succeeded in life.”
That determination carried him through an early crisis in his first business, when a client purchased $55,000 worth of equipment and immediately filed for bankruptcy. It was a significant blow, but Sam rebuilt within six months and kept going. He eventually grew that telecommunications company and sold it, using the proceeds to launch what became Cyber Sainik.
The Plan: Real Protection, Around the Clock
Many cybersecurity firms claim to offer 24/7 monitoring. Sam says the reality is that most of them rely on software to send alerts to a human who may or may not be available or wake up in time.
Cyber Sainik operates differently. Their security operations center maintains genuine, eyes-on-screen monitoring every hour of every day. When a threat appears, the team responds in real time, because cyber criminals can move quickly. Intellectual property can be stolen, and bank accounts drained within one to two hours of a breach.
“Some criminals can get in and get out within one to two hours. We eliminate the bad actors in real time.”
A recent case illustrated this capability. Cyber Sainik was managing security for a global healthcare company headquartered in Denmark when a cyber criminal gained access to the system. The team identified and removed the attacker within five minutes. The client was so satisfied that they expanded their contract by 50 percent within a month.
Cyber Sainik holds certifications from Microsoft, Fortinet, and Security Plus, among others. They serve clients in healthcare and financial services, and their focus on customer retention means clients rarely leave. Strong relationships are not a sales tactic. They are the business model.
Protecting Families, Not Just Businesses
One of the most recent expansions of the Cyber Sainik mission reaches beyond the office and into the home. Sam recognized that home networks are largely unprotected, and that cable and internet providers are not designed to stop sophisticated attacks. Working families, including teenagers who are active on social media, are vulnerable.
Cyber Sainik adapted their enterprise technology to serve individuals and families. A household of four can now access the same level of protection as a mid-sized company, for as little as $100 per person per month. The response has been strong, with seven family plans sold in a single month shortly after launch.
Navigating the Road as a Minority Entrepreneur
Sam came to the United States 42 years ago with $200 in his bank account. He earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Arizona State University and built two companies through persistence and hard work. He is candid about the additional weight that minority entrepreneurs carry.
“My brown skin matters. We have to work hard. They already look at you differently.”
He shared a moment from a speaking engagement where audience members were asked to grade two presenters. One evaluator wrote, more Chris and less Sam, referring to his Caucasian colleague. Sam did not dwell on it. He used it as fuel.
His advice to other minority business owners is consistent and direct: never give up, work three times harder than the next person, and understand that the obstacle is part of the path, not a reason to stop.
What Success Looks Like
For Sam, success is not defined by a single metric. It means financial independence. It means making a difference to American businesses and the people who run them. And it means mentoring younger entrepreneurs, particularly those from minority communities, so that the next generation does not have to start with $200 and no roadmap.
Cyber Sainik is currently serving clients in Colorado and New York, with a clear plan to expand across all 50 states. Sam is also working to deepen relationships within the MPMSDC network, pursuing opportunities with corporate partners and continuing to grow the visibility of his company in the markets it serves.
